Stand With The Benham Brothers

benhamsWe have a critical action item as we need you to voice your support for the Benham family, who are the founders of Cities4Life and significant donors to this ministry. Without them, we could not do what we do. Jason and David Benham run The Benham Companies from the Charlotte area, which specializes in real estate management/sales, business consulting, tax planning, technology resource development, social entrepreneur creation, and global efficiency development. Due to their success in the residential real estate market, Jason and David were selected by HGTV to host a new series on their network, Flip It Forward, slated to air in the fall. On the show, the brothers would guide families who are new to house flipping as they find the right place, fix it up and flip it.

However, in the midst of filming several episodes, yesterday HGTV abruptly made the decision to cut Flip It Forward from their lineup and to stop filming. Though HGTV has given no official statement about why they abruptly canceled the show, it is no coincidence that earlier in the week, the website “Right-Wing Watch,” a project of Hollywood producer Norman Lear’s People for the American Way, ran an article denouncing the Benhams as “anti-gay, anti-choice extremists.” As a result, there was outrage among liberal HGTV viewers – many who demanded for the Benham’s show to be cancelled or lose their viewership.

On Monday afternoon, HGTV posted the following statement on their Facebook page: “HGTV is currently in process of reviewing all information about the Benhams and we will provide an update as soon as possible”. On Tuesday morning, the following statement from HGTV was posted on their Facebook page: “HGTV has decided not to move forward with the Benham Brothers’ series”. The Benhams’ public statement released today in response to HGTV’s decision was nothing less than professional and Christ-like:

The first and last thought on our minds as we begin and end each day is; have we shined Christ’s light today? Our faith is the fundamental calling in our lives, and the centerpiece of who we are. As Christians we are called to love our fellow man. Anyone who suggests that we hate homosexuals or people of other faiths is either misinformed or lying.

Over the last decade, we’ve sold thousands of homes with the guiding principle of producing value and breathing life into each family that has crossed our path, and we do not, nor will we ever discriminate against people who do not share our views.

We were saddened to hear HGTV’s decision. With all of the grotesque things that can be seen and heard on television today you would think there would be room for two twin brothers who are faithful to our families, committed to biblical principles, and dedicated professionals. If our faith costs us a television show then so be it.

– David & Jason Benham

It is apparent that the Benham’s support of traditional marriage, their leadership in the pro-life movement and their commitment to the Bible’s teaching that Jesus is the only way to God is what lead to this decision by HGTV to part ways with the brothers. The Benham Brothers helped the passing of North Carolina’s Amendment One in May of 2012, which defines marriage as being “between one man and one woman”. The Benhams also were the organizers behind Charlotte 714, a gathering in Charlotte outside the Democratic National Convention, which was a corporate time of prayer, repentance and a commitment to restore biblical values to our country.

We are asking you to stand with The Benham Brothers as they have committed to stand for Christ and make His truth known in our land – no matter the consequences. Will you do your part in letting HGTV know that the cancelling of Flip It Forward is nothing more than their display of intolerance for the Christian worldview? We are asking that you call, email, write HGTV to tell them that their attempts to silence the Christian voice from the public sphere is unacceptable.

Visit the HGTV website contact link, call them at 865-694-2700 and post your concerns on the HGTV Facebook page. There also has been a facebook page, Stand With The Benham Brothers, created to show our support for the Benhams. Please take the time to visit and “like” the page, as it will be updated with news regarding this unraveling controversy. Most importantly, pray for the Benham family as they come under personal attack and slander and for the hearts of the executives at HGTV – that they would fall under conviction and realize the wrong that they have done in unjustifiably cancelling Flip it Forward. Above all, may God use this as opportunity to shine His glorious Gospel and the light of Christ with a watching world.
